Home based Super Eagles crash out of CHAN as they lose 0-1 to Guinea

Image
The home based Super Eagles of Nigeria this afternoon crashed out of the African Cup of Nations tournament for home based players after playing out a 0-1 loss to the Syli Nationale of Guinea. This was  Sunday  Oliseh's first major test as the Super Eagles coach. While Nigeria needed just a point to qualify through to the knockout stages of the tournament, Guinea needed the full three points and got a win over the Super Eagles.   Sunday  Oliseh started Sunshine Stars attacker Tunde Adeniji in place of top scorer Chikatara but the team's lacklustre display in front of goal meant the technical crew had to rue that decision. To show how badly the Super Eagles fared against the Syli Nationale, it took over twenty minutes before the team could muster a shot. Guinea took the lead after Daouda Camara eased past Nigeria's defence to lay an assist for Ibrahim Sankhon who slotted into the net.       Coach  Sunday  Oliseh was forced to ...

The Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Ibrahim Garba, disclosed this on Tuesday while addressing newsmen at the main Campus in Samaru, Zaria. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the briefing was part of series of activities toward the 38th Convocation Ceremony slated for Saturday, Jan. 30. “This is a prototype refinery that runs on one barrel a day. It is a very long term project, we started it then Raw Materials Development Council came in to support. “The project being built in stages, so far we can produce petrol (PMS) and diesel. South Sudan president, rebel leader should face sanctions: UN panel

Image
The UN Security Council should put South Sudan’s president and rebel leader on a sanctions blacklist for targeting civilians, and impose an arms embargo, a UN panel of experts said. President Salva Kiir and rebel chief Riek Machar are responsible for most of the violence committed during the war, now in its third year, said the report by the panel obtained by AFP on Tuesday. Imposing sanctions on the two leaders would be by far the strongest step yet taken by the 15-member council, which has been largely powerless to stop the fighting in South Sudan, one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises. “There is clear and convincing evidence that most of the acts of violence committed during the war, including the targeting of civilians and violations of international humanitarian law and international human rights law, have been directed by or undertaken with the knowledge of senior individuals at the highest levels of government and within the opposition,” said the report. Kiir and...

EU warns Pakistan over migrant cooperation

Image
Migrants begin walking towards the Austrian border in Bicske, near Budapest, Hungary, on. PHOTO: stuff The European Union complained on Tuesday about difficulties in deporting migrants to Pakistan, warning it could take steps against Islamabad if it fails to comply with a deal on repatriations. Struggling with its biggest flow of refugees since World War II, the EU persuaded Pakistan in November to restore a suspended agreement to facilitate the return of Pakistani illegal immigrants without documentation. Pakistan was one of the top five countries of origin among the one million migrants who arrived in Europe last year, although most are considered economic migrants rather than refugees from conflict. “While discussions have been good and positive, we note that there are still difficulties with this readmission deal,” European Commission spokeswoman Natasha Bertaud told a news briefing. “The Commission is currently examining possible incentives — positive and negative — ...

Count Buratai out of $2.1b arms deal, says army

Image
General Tukur Buratai, Chief of Army Staff THE leadership of the Nigerian Army yesterday described the group that called for the inclusion of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Yusuf Buratai, in the ongoing military arms procurement probe as mischief-maker and blackmailer, which lacks facts to carry out a “campaign of calumny.” A statement issued yesterday in Abuja by the Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Col. Sani Usman, said: “It is another campaign intended to misrepresent the institution of the Nigerian army and its current leadership, but unfortunately, the movement could not get its facts right as has always been the case with people with dubious intents. Contrary to their mischief, it should be noted that Gen. Buratai was Director of Procurement at Defence Headquarters from March 2014 to May 2015, and not from 2012 to 2015 as they wished to mislead the public.” He said the release signed by “Steven Chilaka, its National Secretary” demanding for the inclusion of th...
